What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is the leading process optimisation method. Originating from quality management, Six Sigma has established itself over the past decades as one of the leading methods for process optimisation in companies and consultancy practices. Six Sigma is a holistic process and is applied on four levels:

  • Corporate philosophy
  • Project management (DMAIC)
  • Tools (Lean Management)
  • Statistical methods
Six Sigma can be applied at all four levels without regard to the other levels. However, it only becomes a holistic breakthrough strategy when the management team introduces Top Down Six Sigma across all of these levels.

What is the Green Belt/Black Belt?

Six Sigma improvement projects are led by specially-trained staff. The Six Sigma leadership methodology is based on role definitions inspired by rank indicators used in Japanese martial arts.

The Green Belt is an integral part of middle management and includes people who participate in projects as team members or who also lead smaller projects while reporting to a Black Belt.

The Black Belt is a full-time Six Sigma improvement expert. He is responsible for project management tasks and has in-depth knowledge in the application of the various Six Sigma methods. The Black Belt is responsible for the implementation of four improvement projects per year with a resulting cost savings of €200,000 each, as well as the overall management of around four other projects.

What is the DMAIC process?

The DMAIC process is the core Six Sigma improvement process and is used to improve existing products and processes. It is an extension, for example, of the Definition (Define) of customer needs through corresponding Data Acquisition (Measure) and the Analysis (Analyze) of the data, e.g. with regard to possible reasons for deviations from defined performance targets, the implementation of Improvements (Improve) and the Control (Control) of the implemented measures. For each of the process phases, the Six Sigma concept provides a variety of different methods.

What do I need to become a certified Green Belt?

Basically, the Green Belt training is divided into a theoretical and a practical part.

The practical part teaches the successful application of the Six Sigma methodology. We have developed role-playing exercises and experiments that will be carried out during the course. The following aspects are considered during the practical part:

  • Are measurable results achieved?
  • Is there general support for improvement initiatives?
  • Was the acquired knowledge shared with others?
  • Were the tools or methodology used in everyday work?
  • Identification of further improvement potential

The appropriate factual and professional use of the tools is evaluated by our examiners.

To become a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt, you must complete a two-hour exam at the end of the last training day.

What do I need to become a certified Black Belt?

To become a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, you must complete an exam at the end of the last training day.

Obtaining the status of Certified Black Belt requires proof of project experience. This proof can be provided in the following ways:

  • 1. You have completed two projects in the past that correspond to the definition of a Six Sigma project. You must provide proof of this, which will be reviewed by the instructor.
  • 2. You have completed a project in the past that meets the definition of a Six Sigma project and have at least three years experience in the work environment as defined by the ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge (BOK). You must provide proof of this, which will be reviewed by the instructor.

Questions on how to have your project experience recognised? Don't hesitate to contact us! We would be happy to help you evaluate your existing Six Sigma projects and experience.

If you are looking to become a Six Sigma Black Belt but do not have project experience, we can issue you a Six Sigma Black Belt certificate after you have successfully passed the exam. The status of "certified" is only valid with your own project.

Which Six Sigma tool categories must be used for certification?

For the Green Belt training six of the following eight tool categories must be applied:

Project strategy: The DMAIC methodology must be recognisable and must be completed in its individual stages.

Process Sequence Plans or Flowcharts: : These include both SIPOC and detailed flowcharts, as well as the collection of inputs and outputs.

Cause and effect analysis (e.g. Ishikawa or U&W matrix)

Handling of key figures: These include graphical and statistical evaluations.

Evaluation of measuring equipment: Either a Gauge R&R study or an attributive match analysis must be submitted.

FMEA or risk analysis must be applied.

Statistical test methods: At least one of the test methods must be used. These include t-test, variance analysis, median tests, regression, chi-square test, proportion test and logistic regression.

Rule and control strategy: In order to ensure the continuity of an implemented improvement, a logical control loop must be introduced.

Experimental strategy: This includes the construction of statistical experimental planning or the preparation of a multi-vari-study.

Analysis of more complex experiments: This includes the evaluation of test series with several influencing factors or results.

Rule and control strategy: In order to ensure the continuity of an implemented improvement, a logical control loop must be introduced.

Does a certification exam have to be taken?

The Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt training does not guarantee successful completion of an exam. It is most important that, in addition to the theoretical part of the training, Six Sigma is successfully applied within a project.

However, to obtain certification from us and the status of a Certified Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, you must take an exam with us on the last day of training.

The Six Sigma College Düsseldorf exam rules can be found ➚here.

Is the Six Sigma certificate internationally recognised through the ASQ membership?

Yes, our ➚Six Sigma certificate is internationally recognised. Being a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) ensures that our training and education is designed around the global standard.

What does Lean Six Sigma mean?

Lean Six Sigma is the combination of the Six Sigma concept and the methods of Lean management. Lean management refers to the set of principles, methods and procedures applied for the efficient design of the entire value chain of industrial goods. It enables the successful application of the Six Sigma methodology across the entire value chain, including not only the company itself but also upstream and downstream of the production stages.
